Despite of the popular belief that white hair is a sign of wisdom, it actually has nothing to do with the change in hair color with age, American scientists are convinced. This graying is caused by the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide due to wear of the hair follicles and peroxide blocks normal synthesis of melanin – the natural pigment of hair.
“All the hair cells produce tiny particles of hydrogen peroxide and the older you get, the greater is the amount of the substance produced. Thus, the hair loses color and becomes gray inside, and then completely white, say scientists said. They studied the cell culture of the follicles of hair and found that the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide is caused by reducing the amount of ferment, to facilitate breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen: Follicles can not recover damages caused by hydrogen peroxide because low levels of enzymes (MSR A and B), which normally perform this function. Moreover, high levels of hydrogen peroxide and low concentrations of key enzymes prevent the formation of enzymes tyrosinase, which regulates the production of melanin in the hair follicles. It is melanin responsible for hair color, skin tone and eyes.
